one FREEZING AND FROST DAMAGE Although this applies more to young trees than to trees that are well established, all trees can benefit from mulching. Dig in around the roots a mixture of peat moss, decaying leaves, grass clip- pings or any one of the commercial mixes available in garden nurseries. two SUCKERS Suckers can sometimes be a problem on trees that have been grafted. The original root stock is trying to assert itself and in doing so is divert- ing food and strength from the grafted tree. The best way to remove these suckers is to trace them back to the root and pull them off. Cutting them away encourages further growth. thr WATER SPROUTS Small side shoots will sometimes make an appearance at the side of a tree where a large branch has been removed. These shoots, or 'water sprouts' as they are called, can detract from the appearance of the tree and should be cut away close to the tree trunk. fiv STORM DAMAGE Sometimes after a storm, or for aesthetic reasons, it becomes necessary to remove a large branch. The best way to do this without damaging the trunk is to trim the branch down to a manageable size by cutting sections from the end of the branch until there is about two feet left at the trunk. Start cutting this from underneath close to the trunk six to about a third of the way through, then finish by cutting from the top. After the branch has been removed, paint the trunk with a sealing compound to keep insects and disease spores away from the wound. RESIN OOZING FROM CANKERS Destroy any infected branches. Scrape the canker and apply a protective coating or dressing. sev INSECT ATTACK Spray with Diazinon, malathion or methyoxychlor. LEAVES HAVE HOLES OR CHEWED EDGES This is usually the work of Inchworms or leaf beetles. Apply acephate. Spray with Diazinon or malathion. nine LEAVES AND FLOWERS WILT AND TURN BLACK This is usually caused by a bacteria attack. Spray with Bordeaux mixture as tree begins to blossom. BRANCHES WILT, LEAVES DROP, TREE DIES Very frequently, this is caused by a fungus, the disease known as Dutch Elm Disease.
